Since May 2019, the "Lehm-Ton-Erde" Baukunst GmbH has been building a new workshop and integrated planning office as an additional production facility for the production of rammed earth products in the municipality of Schlins in Vorarlberg.
The operating building has a total dimension of about 67 meter by 24 (20) meter and a constructed area about 1537m². The open-plan workshop is founded on concrete strip foundations and the main construction of the hall is a combined hybrid construction in solid wood construction and rammed earth. The rammed clay walls of the workshop are produced on site and the structure is designed as a structural timber construction, as a combined laminated beam and truss construction.
The building technology of the hall unites several clay building techniques and timber construction methods under one roof, in several components such as facades and interior fittings. Overall, the construction represents a significant innovation for earth construction due to the dimensioning and, above all, the mechanical stress of the rammed earth material.
Earth building is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the most modern construction methods of our time. What economic, environmental, and social conditions are necessary for an upscaling of earth to occur?
In the future, cement, the most important component of concrete, will – as well as other finite resources – become less viable to produce and significantly more expensive. Considering appropriate alternatives for building materials is becoming imperative.
This book presents a wide scope of built and unbuilt projects as well as strategies that can be implemented to edify processes of building, adapting the use of earth to each unique culture and context. Using impressive examples, the authors demonstrate groundbreaking technological innovations that highlight the advantages of this material: from its worldwide availability to the possibility of comprehensive recycling, from climate-neutral production to socially just implementation, including a focus on emerging economies. This book reveals the incredible potentials of earthen architecture – for people and for the entire planet.

From 11th to 19th June 2019 a workshop of Anna Heringer and Martin Rauch took place at the studio of Lehm Ton Erde in Schlins.
Twelve students from Harvard University in Boston (USA) participated. These days, various clay constructions were taught, tested, and used 1:1. The aim of the workshop was to learn about the use of different loam constructions and to reflect the establishment of a resource-efficient construction industry. As a prototype a rammed earth wall, which serves as a sculpture, was erected. Several details such as ground connections, niches, ceiling connections could be tested. During Harvard´s visit, furthermore the Vorarlberg building culture was in the foreground, which they greatly appreciated.

What design principles might we learn from nature that can be applied to
designing, producing and managing life in a resource-efficient and sustainable
way? The exhibition tells the story of a tree’s eco-system and thereby
demonstrates nature’s strategies and patterns that have been envolving for
more than 3.8 thousand million years. The audience is introduced to the
framework and the practice of biomimicry by learning from ordinary and
innovative applications in various crafts and design professions.
This transdisciplinary exhibition project is underpinned by extensive
collaborative research and oriented toward educating all stakeholders. Thus,
the exhibition brings together science, crafts and artistic production in an
inspiring learning lab for the whole family.
The exhibition shows a rammed earth socel by Lehm Ton Erde for the architectural model of the Werkraumhaus.

Marta Rauch-Debevec and Sebastian Rauch of „KARAK gebrannte Zeichen" are especially pleased by the internationally recognised Reddot Design Award „best of the best" 2012, a prize they were awarded on Monday 2nd July 2012 in Essen, for their Kuqua series of tiles.
The work was assessed by a top-class panel of experts, that stated: "The KuQua series of tiles successfully combines artisanal tradition with design. Their three dimensional appearance creates a sense of depth and leads to attractive visual effects. They offer architects and planners a wide range of new possibilities for using tiles."
Martin Rauch won together with Anna Heringer, Nägele-Waibel Architekten and Salima Naji the competition for a school of sustainable development in Marrakesh, Morocco. The project was awarded with the Holcim Awards Bronze 2011 Africa Middle East and is participant of the Holcim Global Awards 2011.
