Nestled between townhouses in the centre of Nuremberg since 1385, an unexplained fire in 2014 burned down the St. Martha Church, destroying its roof structure and large parts of its interior and fenestration. Florian Nagler Architects were tasked with rebuilding the monument, restoring the exterior to its former prominence while freely reshaping the interior to their contemporary taste. Lehm Ton Erde built a rammed earth floor that covers and in parts, integrates with the historic tiling. The vapour permeability of the earthen floor ensures passive humidity control, creating an optimal microclimate for sensitive instruments such as the organ.
